0012|     MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR TEACHER WRITING INSTRUCTION PROJECTS

0013|     TO IMPROVE WRITING AND CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS OF PRIMARY AND

0016|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0017|       Section 1.  APPROPRIATION.--Two hundred thousand dollars
    |
0018|     ($200,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state
    |
0019|     department of public education for expenditure in fiscal year
    |
0020|     1997 for the purpose of funding the expansion of teacher writing
    |
0021|     instruction projects at eastern New Mexico university, the
    |
0022|     university of New Mexico and New Mexico state university and
    |
0023|     establishing an additional writing instruction project in
    |
0024|     western or northern New Mexico.  The purpose of the writing
    |
0025|     instruction projects is to provide professional development
    |
0001|     instruction to primary and secondary school teachers to improve
    |
0002|     writing and critical thinking skills of primary and secondary
    |
0003|     students and to enable those teachers to provide instruction to
    |
0004|     other teachers.  Any unexpended or unencumbered balance
    |
0005|     remaining at the end of fiscal year 1997 shall revert to the
    |
0006|     general fund.
