0005| RELATING TO THE PUBLIC PEACE, HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELFARE;

0006| CREATING A COMMISSION TO CELEBRATE THE FOUR HUNDREDTH
|
0007| ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST SPANISH COLONY AT SAN GABRIEL AT SAN
|
0008| JUAN PUEBLO; MAKING AN APPROPRIATION; DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.
|

0010| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
|
0011| Section 1. COMMISSION--APPOINTMENT AND TERMS--DUTIES.--
|
0012| A. There is created the "San Gabriel commission", to
|
0013| be composed of seven members, three members appointed by the
|
0014| speaker of the house of representatives, three members appointed
|
0015| by the president pro tempore of the senate and one member
|
0016| appointed by the governor. Members shall serve from the time of
|
0017| their appointment until January 1, 1999. Each member of the
|
0018| commission shall be a resident of north-central New Mexico. The
|
0019| commission shall select a chairperson and such other officers it
|
0020| deems appropriate from among its membership. Commission members
|
0021| shall receive no salary, per diem, mileage or other compensation
|
0022| or perquisite.
|
0023| B. The San Gabriel commission shall recommend to the
|
0024| office of cultural affairs a suitable permanent artistic
|
0025| monument or display commemorating the first settlement by
|
0001| Hispanic people north of the Rio Grande at San Gabriel de Yunque
|
0002| Yunque, now known as San Juan pueblo, in Rio Arriba county. The
|
0003| commission shall, with the assistance of the Hispanic cultural
|
0004| division of the office of cultural affairs, arrange a suitable
|
0005| celebration marking this historic event and shall seek funding
|
0006| for the celebration from public and private sources.
|
0007| Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Two hundred twenty-five
|
0008| thousand dollars ($225,000) is appropriated from the general
|
0009| fund to the Hispanic cultural division of the office of cultural
|
0010| affairs for expenditure in fiscal years 1996 and 1997 to acquire
|
0011| and install, at the municipal plaza in the city of Espanola in
|
0012| Rio Arriba county, a permanent artistic monument or display
|
0013| commemorating the first Hispanic settlement north of the Rio
|
0014| Grande at San Gabriel de Yunque Yunque. Any unexpended or
|
0015| unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 1997
|
0016| shall revert to the general fund.
|
0017| Section 3. EMERGENCY.--It is necessary for the public
|
0018| peace, health and safety that this act take effect immediately.
