A MEMORIAL

ENCOURAGING ALL STATE DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PLANNING, ORGANIZATION AND CARRYING OUT OF ACTIVITIES COMMEMORATING THE CENTENNIAL OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF HISTORIC ROUTE 66.

 

     WHEREAS, route 66 was established in 1926 and served as a vital transportation artery across the United States, fostering economic growth and cross-cultural interactions important to the creation of modern America; and

     WHEREAS, the centennial anniversary of route 66 is approaching, and celebrations and commemorations are being scheduled all across America to acknowledge the importance of this famous highway; and

     WHEREAS, route 66 crossed five hundred thirty-five miles of New Mexico, touching numerous communities and becoming a symbol of expansion and adventure in a critical time in the state's and nation's history; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico landscapes, landmarks and historical sites along route 66 have become destinations for travelers from all over the world, contributing to the state's tourism industry; and

     WHEREAS, the centennial anniversary of route 66 presents an occasion to recognize and honor the contributions of New Mexico's diverse communities and people along the historic route; and

     WHEREAS, congress has established the United States route 66 centennial commission; and

     WHEREAS, the states of Arizona, California, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas have established an interstate consortium to enable resource and expertise sharing; and

     WHEREAS, the governor, by executive order, has established the route 66 coordination group to identify projects and activities within the state that align with the strategy of promoting the route 66 centennial;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that all state departments and agencies be encouraged to collaborate in any way possible with planning, organizing or supporting activities related to the route 66 centennial, with particular emphasis on the state's cultural heritage, historic attractions, artistic expressions and culinary traditions, all in the name of promoting local businesses and fostering economic prosperity; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the governor for distribution to all executive departments and agencies.
