A MEMORIAL
CONGRATULATING THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY'S WASTE ISOLATION PILOT PLANT FOR TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF OPERATION.
WHEREAS, more than forty years ago, the United States department of energy began the massive and unprecedented undertaking of constructing the nation's first deep geologic repository for radioactive waste, in an ancient underground salt formation located approximately twenty-six miles southeast of Carlsbad; and
WHEREAS, teams of engineers, scientists, geologists, miners and trade workers successfully completed construction of the waste isolation pilot plant; and
WHEREAS, on March 26, 1999, the waste isolation pilot plant received its first shipment of transuranic waste from Los Alamos national laboratory; and
WHEREAS, the waste isolation pilot plant has continued its mission to enable legacy cleanup of radioactive waste throughout the nation; and
WHEREAS, today, the waste isolation pilot plant is a cornerstone of the United States department of energy's national security and environmental cleanup missions;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that congratulations be extended to the waste isolation pilot plant on twenty-five years of critical mission delivery; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the waste isolation pilot plant's workforce be congratulated and thanked for its dedicated service to national security and environmental cleanup missions; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the directors, managers and workforce of the waste isolation pilot plant; the officers and directors of Salado isolation mining contractors, L.L.C.; the manager of the Carlsbad field office of the office of environmental management of the United States department of energy; and the United States secretary of energy.
