A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THAT THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO STUDY THE CREATION OF AN UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAM IN MUSIC THERAPY.

 

     WHEREAS, the state of New Mexico would greatly benefit from more music therapists; and

     WHEREAS, music therapy is music-based treatment for adults and children with psychiatric disorders, cognitive and developmental disabilities, speech and hearing impairments, physical disabilities and neurological impairments; and

     WHEREAS, music therapists are employed in many different settings, including general and psychiatric hospitals, community mental health agencies, rehabilitation centers, daycare facilities, nursing homes, schools and private practices; and

     WHEREAS, music therapist education consists of the study of music, psychology, biology and social and behavioral sciences and includes fieldwork in off-campus clinics or hospitals; and

     WHEREAS, an undergraduate or graduate degree in music therapy can lead to certification by the certification board for music therapists; and

     WHEREAS, an undergraduate and graduate degree program in music therapy could encourage college students to stay in New Mexico to study music therapy and became certified music therapists;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the university of New Mexico's department of music, college of fine arts and health sciences center, along with New Mexican music therapists, study the creation of an undergraduate and graduate degree program in music therapy; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the university of New Mexico's dean of the department of music, dean of the college of fine arts and executive vice president of the health sciences center.
