AN ACT
RELATING TO HIGHWAYS; REQUIRING THE DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF "FALLEN OFFICER" SIGNAGE.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
SECTION 1. A new section of Chapter 67 NMSA 1978 is enacted to read:
"[NEW MATERIAL] FALLEN OFFICER SIGNAGE--DESIGN--INSTALLATION.--
A. On or before January 1, 2022, the state transportation commission shall create a template for a highway sign to commemorate law enforcement officers who are killed in the line of duty while on a state highway or highway easement. The adopted template shall establish the height and width of the signs and such other requirements as the commission deems
necessary by rule. Such signs shall be known as "Fallen Officer" signs.
B. The department shall accept donations of Fallen Officer signs and install them at or near the site where an officer died within three months of a sign being donated."
SECTION 2. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the provisions of this act is July 1, 2021.
