A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 4, 2020 "WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE DAY" IN THE SENATE.

 

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico farm and livestock bureau has been the voice of agriculture in New Mexico since 1917, and the bureau is an independent, voluntary, grassroots organization that advocates for agriculture to ensure a sustainable future; and

     WHEREAS, the women's leadership program is part of the New Mexico farm and livestock bureau and supports women in agriculture and their leadership development roles; and

     WHEREAS, thirty-four percent of New Mexico farmers and ranchers are women, and they have an economic impact of eighty-eight million five hundred thousand dollars ($88,500,000); and

     WHEREAS, agriculture is a major contributor to New Mexico's economy as the third largest employer in the state; and

     WHEREAS, women are of vital importance to rural economies, not only in New Mexico but across the nation and around the world; and

     WHEREAS, women raising poultry and small livestock and growing food crops are responsible for sixty percent to eighty percent of food production in developing countries; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico senate supports women in agriculture and women in leadership roles;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 4, 2020 be declared "Women in Agriculture Day" in the senate in honor of the New Mexico women farmers and ranchers who work hard to provide residents of New Mexico, the United States and the world with the food, fuel and fiber they consume; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the director of the New Mexico department of agriculture.
