A MEMORIAL
HONORING REPRESENTATIVE JIM R. TRUJILLO AND RECOGNIZING HIS LEADERSHIP AND OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, after seventeen years as a state representative for District 45, serving Santa Fe, Jim R. Trujillo is retiring from the legislature at the end of 2020; and
WHEREAS, Representative Trujillo was appointed on January 7, 2003 to a term ending in 2004, replacing Representative Patsy Trujillo Knauer; and
WHEREAS, for every two-year term from 2006 through 2018, Representative Trujillo ran unopposed, with no primary or general election opposition; and
WHEREAS, Representative Trujillo is a former teacher, small business owner and state employee; and
WHEREAS, Representative Trujillo served as a member on many house standing committees, including the business and employment committee from 2015 to 2016; the business and industry committee from 2003 to 2014 and from 2017 to 2018; the energy, minerals and natural resources committee as vice chair from 2005 to 2008; and the taxation and revenue committee as vice chair from 2009 to 2014, chair from 2017 to 2019 and co-chair in 2020; and
WHEREAS, during his terms in office, Representative Trujillo also served on the commerce and economic development committee, the enrolling and engrossing committee, the government and urban affairs committee, the printing and supplies committee and the ways and means committee; and
WHEREAS, Representative Trujillo was an active member on numerous interim committees, including the investments and pensions oversight committee; the science, technology and telecommunications committee; the land grant committee; the legislative education study committee; the legislative finance committee; the revenue stabilization and tax policy committee; and the military and veterans' affairs committee; and
WHEREAS, Representative Trujillo was a strong advocate who championed affordable housing programs, particularly to address homelessness in Santa Fe; and
WHEREAS, Representative Trujillo has shown environmental foresight by introducing tax credits for the purchase of electric vehicles; and
WHEREAS, from early on, Representative Trujillo has supported same-day voter registration and voting on election day; and
WHEREAS, education funding initiatives have Representative Trujillo's support as well; and
WHEREAS, Representative Trujillo has been a voice for those he considers unheard, underserved and invisible; and
WHEREAS, Representative Trujillo has led the house taxation and revenue committee with goals of fairness and equal taxation; and
WHEREAS, Representative Trujillo's colleagues describe him as thoughtful, practical, humble and kind and a principled man whose presence will be missed;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Representative Jim R. Trujillo be honored for his years of public service and for his unwavering commitment to being a voice for those who might not otherwise be heard; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Representative Jim R. Trujillo.
