A MEMORIAL
PRESENTING THE SPEAKER'S GAVEL.
WHEREAS, the speaker's gavel is the symbol of the office of the speaker of the house of representatives; and
WHEREAS, the speaker's gavel, made in collaboration and crafted by hand by master craftsmen Douglas Magnus and Dylan Weller, is a gift to the New Mexico House of Representatives; and
WHEREAS, Douglas Magnus and Dylan Weller have honed their woodworking craft in New Mexico for decades; and
WHEREAS, Douglas Magnus has spent the last forty years discovering and mastering the unique materials that New Mexico has to offer, exhibiting collections of his work widely throughout the state and country; and
WHEREAS, Dylan Weller, a third-generation woodworker, has completed extensive custom work, notably for SITE Santa Fe, and has dedicated time mentoring others at the woodworking club at St. John's college; and
WHEREAS, made in Santa Fe using traditional woodworking and silversmithing techniques, the speaker's gavel reflects the artistry and creativity for which New Mexico's artisans are known; and
WHEREAS, the speaker's gavel is constructed of walnut, a wood known for its toughness and a symbol of intelligence, wisdom and knowledge; and
WHEREAS, the speaker's gavel is embedded with turquoise mined from the famous Tiffany and Castillian mines of Cerrillos, New Mexico, and is embellished with a sterling silver zia at its head; and
WHEREAS, designed to reflect the self-reliant spirit of all New Mexicans, the speaker's gavel symbolizes the hard work and tenacity that have shaped New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, in that same spirit, the speaker's gavel unites all New Mexicans in the spirit of the state's constitution; and
WHEREAS, the speaker's gavel shall remain in the people's house for future legislatures;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the speaker's gavel be presented to the New Mexico House of Representatives; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to Douglas Magnus and Dylan Weller.
