A MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING LEVEO V. SANCHEZ FOR HIS SIGNIFICANT AND VALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY DURING HIS TENURE ON THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY.
WHEREAS, after distinguished service and advocacy on behalf of New Mexico highlands university, the tenure of Leveo V. Sanchez on the New Mexico highlands university board of regents is ending; and
WHEREAS, Leveo was first appointed to the board of regents by Governor Bill Richardson in 2008 and will finish his term in March 2019; and
WHEREAS, Leveo is a New Mexico native who returned to the state in 2006; and
WHEREAS, Leveo received a bachelor's degree in economics from New Mexico highlands university and a master's degree in foreign affairs with a major in Latin American studies from George Washington university school of government; and
WHEREAS, he is also a graduate of the United States Army corp of engineers officers' candidate school; and
WHEREAS, Leveo is a dynamic leader with decades of domestic and international business success and distinguished public service; and
WHEREAS, from 1966 to 2005, Leveo established several successful businesses in governmental and management consulting, banking, real estate development and investment, property management and export trading; and
WHEREAS, in 1969, Leveo founded and chaired development associates, an international consulting firm specializing in social and economic development, and it became one of the largest minority-owned and operated consulting firms in the country; and
WHEREAS, in 1974, Leveo was a founding partner and the initial chairman of hemisphere national bank in Washington, D.C. and served as president until the bank was sold in 1981; and
WHEREAS, Leveo's public sector experience has spanned continents and shows his commitment to people from diverse cultures; and
WHEREAS, Leveo served as deputy director of the peace corps in the Latin American region, as director of the United States office of economic opportunity in the Mid-Atlantic region and as the director of the United States office of institutional development in the Latin American bureau of the agency for international development; and
WHEREAS, Leveo has served as president of the Pan American development foundation and the New Mexico highlands university foundation; and
WHEREAS, he has served as a board member of the greater Washington business center, the Smithsonian institute, the United States Hispanic chamber of commerce and as board chairman of the Latino economic development corporation; and
WHEREAS, Leveo also served as the director of the national Hispanic cultural center foundation and the Las Vegas San Miguel economic development corporation;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Leveo V. Sanchez be recognized for his significant and valuable contributions to New Mexico highlands university during his tenure on the board of regents of the university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Leveo V. Sanchez be acknowledged for sharing his expertise tirelessly on the board of regents for the betterment of New Mexico highlands university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to Leveo V. Sanchez and the president of New Mexico highlands university.
