A MEMORIAL
DECLARING FEBRUARY 28, 2019 "CITY OF LAS VEGAS, SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, VILLAGE OF PECOS AND MORA COUNTY DAY" IN THE SENATE AND RECOGNIZING THE COLLABORATION OF THE CITY OF LAS VEGAS, SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, THE VILLAGE OF PECOS AND MORA COUNTY AS "UNITY BUILDS COMMUNITY".
WHEREAS, Las Vegas was founded in 1835 as a Spanish land grant called Nuestra Senora de Los Dolores de Las Vegas Grandes; and
WHEREAS, the Spanish settlers that founded the community had roots going back to the seventeenth century; and
WHEREAS, the village of Pecos in San Miguel county has long been an attractive destination, from the days of early trading routes on the Santa Fe trail through Spanish settlement, railroad tourism, mining, ranching and becoming a route 66 attraction along the beautiful Pecos river valley; and
WHEREAS, the town of Mora in Mora county, in an area also known as the Mora valley, which was founded by a land grant at the foot of the majestic Sangre de Cristo mountains, contains one thousand nine hundred thirty-four square miles of lands with diverse uses, including ranching and farming, and conveys a vital and well-preserved sense of place; and
WHEREAS, the acequias in Las Vegas and within San Miguel county, the village of Pecos and Mora county are a testament to multiple generations of strenuous labor expended in farming and irrigating the land and incorporating the family values and traditions of being responsible stewards of the land; and
WHEREAS, the city of Las Vegas and San Miguel county, the village of Pecos and Mora county are unmatched as inviting and incredible tourist destinations with historical sites, outdoor recreation, diverse multicultural populations, farming and ranching, a small business economy and a unique sense of place with a quality of life driven by nature; and
WHEREAS, the city of Las Vegas, San Miguel county, the village of Pecos and Mora county are home to many critical institutions, including New Mexico highlands university, Luna community college, United World college, the New Mexico behavioral health institute at Las Vegas, the Mora national fish hatchery, New Mexico state university, the John T. Harrington forestry research center, the Pecos valley medical center, the Lisboa springs fish hatchery, the San Miguel county senior citizens centers, Mora valley community health services, the Wagon Mound senior center, public and private schools, small businesses and other institutions serving as the economic base for northeast New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, the city of Las Vegas, San Miguel county, the village of Pecos and Mora county are committed to the collaboration of a growing film industry and support of small business development, highlighting the skills and talents of residents to produce economic development and growth within the northeastern part of New Mexico;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the distinguished history and heritage of the city of Las Vegas, San Miguel county, the village of Pecos and Mora county be recognized and that February 28, 2019 be declared "City of Las Vegas, San Miguel County, Village of Pecos and Mora County Day" in the senate; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the collaboration of these communities be recognized as "unity builds community"; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that support from the state's governing bodies recognize these communities as areas of small business, education, tourism, outdoor attractions, farming, ranching, medical and behavioral health, film, water and acequias, in continuing efforts to promote the people and attractions, and to create jobs and sustainability, in northern New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the mayor and city councilors of the city of Las Vegas, the San Miguel county manager and county commissioners, the village of Pecos mayor and board of trustees and the Mora county manager and county commissioners.
