A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO TO RENAME THE CENTENNIAL ENGINEERING CENTER AS THE "LARRY LARRAÑAGA CENTENNIAL ENGINEERING CENTER".

 

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico welcomes the opportunity to honor those who have rendered extraordinary service or support to the university; and

     WHEREAS, facilities, spaces, endowments or programs may be named for individuals or entities whose accomplishments or generosity advance the academic mission of the university and further the capacity of the university to meet its teaching and scholarly objectives and to serve its community and enhance the growth and reputation of the university; and

     WHEREAS, Larry A. Larrañaga, a former legislator who represented house district 27, covering the northeast heights in Albuquerque, from 1995 to 2018, died on October 9, 2018 from a rare degenerative brain disorder; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Larrañaga received a bachelor of science degree and a master's degree in engineering from the university of New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, prior to his legislative service, Representative Larrañaga was a cabinet secretary for the state highway and transportation department, now the department of transportation, and a former chief administrative officer for the city of Albuquerque; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Larrañaga was a leading voice on budget legislation during his nearly twenty-four years in the house of representatives; and

     WHEREAS, support of education initiatives was one of Representative Larrañaga's priorities, and he was a member of the public school capital outlay oversight task force from 2001 to 2012; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Larrañaga was highly respected by New Mexico leaders across the political spectrum; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Larrañaga will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, generosity and willingness to serve others and is deserving of having a building named after him to memorialize his legacy;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the board of regents of the university of New Mexico be requested to rename the centennial engineering center as the "Larry Larrañaga Centennial Engineering Center"; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the board of regents of the university of New Mexico and to Larry Larrañaga's widow, Charletta Larrañaga.
