AN ACT
MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO TO CONTINUE THE WORK NECESSARY TO ESTABLISH AND OPERATE AN AFRICAN AMERICAN EDUCATION DEPARTMENT.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
SECTION 1. APPROPRIATION.--Three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the board of regents of the university of New Mexico for expenditure in fiscal year 2020 and subsequent fiscal years to continue the work necessary to establish and operate an African American education department by funding the transition of the current, high-quality Africana studies program into a standalone department that will improve student enrollment, retention, graduation rates and career options, improve the demographic growth of underrepresented students and faculty, expand and diversify the preservation of history in New Mexico, bridge the gap between African American history, the university and the public and expand the understanding of the African American experience among an emergent multinational state population. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of a fiscal year shall not revert to the general fund.
