A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND THE MCKINLEY COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT TO STUDY OPTIONS TO ADDRESS ONGOING FLOOD AND EROSION CONTROL FOR A ROAD IN THE TURTLE BUTTE LOOP AREA ALONG INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 40 AND OLD HIGHWAY 66.

 

     WHEREAS, an ongoing flood and erosion control problem exists in the Turtle Butte loop area in Iyanbito chapter, along interstate highway 40 and old highway 66 near Fort Wingate; and

     WHEREAS, the Iyanbito chapter, along with the Navajo division of transportation and the McKinley county road department, have entered into an agreement assigning the McKinley county road department as the primary administrator over the Iyanbito chapter roads; and

     WHEREAS, the agreement addresses jurisdictional issues between New Mexico and the Navajo Nation; and

     WHEREAS, the department of transportation and the McKinley county road department could identify strategies and tools for the floodplain and waterways management; and

     WHEREAS, partnership with the Navajo Nation division of transportation is essential to resolve the flood and erosion control problems;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of transportation and the McKinley county road department be requested to study options to address ongoing flood and erosion control for a road in the Turtle Butte loop area along interstate highway 40 and old highway 66; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Navajo Nation division of transportation be requested to partner with the department of transportation and McKinley county on addressing the flood and erosion issue; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of transportation, the county commissioners and roads superintendent of McKinley county, the president of Iyanbito chapter and the division director of the Navajo Nation division of transportation.
