A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 6, 2018 "NEW MEXICO DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION SANTA FE TRAIL MARKERS REMEMBRANCE DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, the daughters of the American revolution is a nonprofit, nonpolitical volunteer women's service organization founded in 1890 and dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America's future through better education; and

     WHEREAS, the daughters of the American revolution has sixteen chapters in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the Santa Fe trail association is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986 and dedicated to protecting and preserving the Santa Fe trail to promote awareness of the historical legacy associated with it; and

     WHEREAS, the Santa Fe trail association is composed of people of all ages and walks of life who are bound together by an interest in the Santa Fe trail and an interest in preserving its many physical traces and landmarks that still exist in the American west; and

     WHEREAS, the Santa Fe trail association has three chapters in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, in 1821, the first Santa Fe trail wagon train left Independence, Missouri, for Santa Fe, New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, the Santa Fe trail became America's first great international commercial highway, and for nearly sixty years thereafter was one of the nation's great routes of adventure and western expansion; and

     WHEREAS, in 1910, the daughters of the American revolution, jointly with the territory of New Mexico, placed twenty-one granite markers on the Santa Fe trail in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, nineteen of these markers have been located, photographed and documented with global positioning system coordinates by members of the daughters of the American revolution and the Santa Fe trail association; and

     WHEREAS, the United States congress recognized the significance of the Santa Fe trail to American history proclaiming it a national historic trail in 1987; and

     WHEREAS, the Santa Fe trail will be two hundred years old in 2021; and

     WHEREAS, in preparation for the two hundredth anniversary of the Santa Fe trail, restoration of three markers began in November 2017, with the marker located in the San Miguel county village of Bernal in the shadow of Starvation peak; and

     WHEREAS, the granite Santa Fe trail markers in San Jose del Vado and Tecolote are also scheduled to be restored in the near future;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 6, 2018 be declared "New Mexico Daughters of the American Revolution Santa Fe Trail Markers Remembrance Day" in the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that recognition be extended to the daughters of the American revolution, the Santa Fe trail association, the residents of Bernal who provided manpower and equipment, the Bernal community center, the San Miguel county sheriff's department, the national park service and the New Mexico department of transportation, without whose cooperation these projects could not have been undertaken; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the chair of the American history committee of the New Mexico state society of the daughters of the American Revolution and the president of the Santa Fe trail association.
