A MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION OF LEGISLATIVE STAFF.
WHEREAS, the New Mexico legislature is composed of seventy representatives and forty-two senators and meets at the roundhouse for thirty days in even-numbered years and sixty days in odd-numbered years; and
WHEREAS, although the legislature is only in session for thirty or sixty days, legislative business is conducted year- round; and
WHEREAS, legislative staff is dedicated to assisting all legislators and to making the legislative process run smoothly; and
WHEREAS, permanent, full-time employees provide assistance to legislators throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, during legislative sessions, hundreds of temporary employees are hired to fill the many jobs that are required; and
WHEREAS, it takes a concerted effort of all legislative staff members to make a legislative session run smoothly; and
WHEREAS, permanent legislative staff members from various agencies in the legislature and temporary legislative staff members perform a wide variety of tasks that may include assisting various legislative committees, drafting legislation, conducting research, proofreading legislative documents, providing word processing services, conducting fiscal and policy analyses, conducting performance audits, providing reports to legislative members, providing accounting services, publishing documents for use by the public, maintaining legislative calendars, tracking legislation, printing legislative documents, archiving legislative documents, delivering legislation, enrolling and engrossing legislation, maintaining a legislative library, maintaining the state capitol and its grounds, providing security services, distributing mail, providing food services, maintaining the legislature's information technology infrastructure, providing constituent services, maintaining a legislative website, providing information to the public, providing tours of the state capitol and many other tasks that are too numerous to name; and
WHEREAS, every legislative staff member makes an important contribution to the legislature and to the state of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, the hard work of the legislative staff creates an environment where legislators can focus on championing legislation that represents the will of their constituents while balancing the needs of all residents of the state;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that legislative staff members be recognized for their hard work, dedication and professionalism; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be posted on the legislative website.
