A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING NEW MEXICO HIGHLANDS UNIVERSITY TO STUDY THE FEASABILITY OF CREATING A NEW MEXICO MUSIC MUSEUM IN LAS VEGAS, NEW MEXICO.

     WHEREAS, music is an invaluable aspect of the human experience that connects societies and peoples together across the ages; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico has a long-standing musical tradition that draws from New Mexico's rich heritage, being influenced by Spanish, Mexican, country western, folk and many indigenous cultures; and

     WHEREAS, New Mexico's musical composers and performers tell unique stories through their music, which cannot be found in or compared to those found in any other part of the world; and

     WHEREAS, generations of musicians, who have been educated in the field of music and who have developed many genres and styles of music appreciated by New Mexicans, consider Las Vegas home; and  

     WHEREAS, many performers and groups, such as Cascabel and Sangre Joven, view Las Vegas as a nucleus of the New Mexico music scene and hold Las Vegas in high regard by virtue of the culture and the long-term support from fans in Las Vegas and the surrounding areas; and

     WHEREAS, Las Vegas has been home to many large and well- received musical celebrations, such as the Fourth of July fiestas, the Meadow City music festival and Fridays al fresco, where many New Mexican artists perform and start or continue their careers; and

     WHEREAS, the music departments at New Mexico highlands university, west Las Vegas schools and Las Vegas city schools have prepared many musical artists to create, perform and teach music for years to come, as well as to participate as members in some of New Mexico's most famous musical groups; and

     WHEREAS, the preservation of New Mexico music is essential for generations to come, to maintain our communities and strengthen the bonds that connect us all;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Las Vegas be honored for its musical heritage and that New Mexico highlands university be requested to study the feasibility of establishing a New Mexico music museum in Las Vegas; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to New Mexico highlands university.
