A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 10, 2016 "MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING NEW MEXICO AND NEW MEXICO DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED COORDINATORS AFFILIATE DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

     WHEREAS, in 2015, one hundred eighteen victims lost their lives in crashes caused by impaired driving in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, mothers against drunk driving New Mexico works diligently to support the New Mexico driving while intoxicated coordinators affiliate in all thirty-three New Mexico counties to end impaired driving and to prevent underage drinking; and

     WHEREAS, mothers against drunk driving New Mexico supports all victims of impaired driving and underage drinking by offering emotional support, resources, courtroom experience and advocacy; and

     WHEREAS, mothers against drunk driving New Mexico and the New Mexico driving while intoxicated coordinators affiliate recognize the unique cultural characteristics of New Mexico and its people, and they strive to maintain cultural integrity while eliminating impaired driving and underage drinking; and

     WHEREAS, mothers against drunk driving New Mexico and the New Mexico driving while intoxicated coordinators affiliate recognize the severity of impaired driving and underage drinking and the toll that these behaviors take on New Mexico communities; and

     WHEREAS, mothers against drunk driving New Mexico and the New Mexico driving while intoxicated coordinators affiliate work tirelessly to collaborate with law enforcement, legislators, community leaders, prevention workers and concerned citizens to increase awareness of the astronomical toll that impaired driving and underage drinking wreak on loved ones, survivors, the community and future generations; and

     WHEREAS, mothers against drunk driving New Mexico collaborates in all facets of communities throughout New Mexico by offering prevention programs to parents, guardians and children in kindergarten through the twelfth grade; and

     WHEREAS, mothers against drunk driving New Mexico supports rehabilitation and education by offering victim impact panels in New Mexico where resources allow; and

     WHEREAS, victim impact panels educate first-time offenders on the repercussions of impaired driving from a victim perspective, which impacts offenders as well as the victims; and

     WHEREAS, mothers against drunk driving New Mexico realizes the catastrophic state of crisis regarding repeat offenders of impaired driving in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, mothers against drunk driving New Mexico and the New Mexico driving while intoxicated coordinators affiliate strive to ensure that communities are safe; and 

     WHEREAS, in 2015, too many lives were cut short by impaired driving incidents; and

     WHEREAS, the victims of impaired driving incidents will never be forgotten;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 10, 2016 be declared "Mothers Against Drunk Driving New Mexico and New Mexico Driving While Intoxicated Coordinators Affiliate Day" in the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that awareness of the devastation caused by impaired driving and underage drinking be recognized so that mothers against drunk driving New Mexico can support every victim; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the executive director of mothers against drunk driving New Mexico and the chair of the New Mexico driving while intoxicated coordinators affiliate.
