A MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING THE HISTORIC AND PRESENT-DAY CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE MARTINEZTOWN-SANTA BARBARA NEIGHBORHOOD OF ALBUQUERQUE.
WHEREAS, the neighborhood of Martineztown-Santa Barbara is one of Albuquerque's oldest and most historic communities; and
WHEREAS, Martineztown-Santa Barbara is a charming area of homes and businesses located south of Menaul boulevard and north of Lomas boulevard, with interstate 25 to the east and railroad tracks to the west; and
WHEREAS, the founding patron, Don Manuel Martín, moved from Old Town and settled in Martineztown with his family where he farmed the land; and
WHEREAS, residents of Martineztown-Santa Barbara historically engaged in lively agricultural trade with communities such as Carnuel and east mountain communities using the historic Camino Real and the Camino de Lado route trails; and
WHEREAS, historical Martineztown-Santa Barbara buildings include: the second united Presbyterian church, built circa 1889; Menaul school, built circa 1896; a farmhouse, circa 1907; two homes built in the New Mexico vernacular style, circa 1910; San Ignacio Catholic church, built circa 1916; the old Santa Barbara school, built circa 1930; and the F.M. Mercantile, built in 1977; and
WHEREAS, generations of the Martineztown-Santa Barbara families continue to live there and preserve the community;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the historic Albuquerque community of Martineztown-Santa Barbara be recognized for its historical and present-day contributions to the character of Albuquerque and New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the Martineztown work group and the Santa Barbara-Martineztown neighborhood association.
