A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 9, 2015 "UNM DAY" IN THE SENATE IN RECOGNITION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO'S DEDICATION TO EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND PUBLIC SERVICE FOR THE RESIDENTS OF NEW MEXICO.

 

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico was founded in 1889; and

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is the state's flagship research institution, serving thirty-six thousand seven hundred twenty-two students and employing twenty-two thousand fifty-seven New Mexicans; and

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico enrolls forty-eight percent of New Mexico college students in four-year institutions and has the highest four-year, five-year and six-year graduation rates in New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, university of New Mexico students attain forty-four percent of the state's baccalaureate degrees and seventy-seven percent of the state's doctoral and first professional degrees; and

     WHEREAS, there are more than one hundred fifty-nine thousand active alumni, with lobos in every state and nearly one hundred countries; and

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico provides a research-driven education whereby faculty members engage in the investigation and scholarship that create new knowledge; and

     WHEREAS, Hispanic Business Magazine has ranked the university of New Mexico in the top ten in the country for best business school, best engineering school, best law school and best medical school; and

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico health sciences center is the largest academic health complex in the state, combining education, research, patient care and community outreach to provide New Mexicans with the highest level of health care; and

     WHEREAS, since 2008, the university of New Mexico has received over two billion one hundred million dollars ($2,100,000,000) in contracts and research awards; and

     WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico filed for six hundred sixty-seven patents and was issued two hundred ninety-six patents; and

     WHEREAS, the goal of the university of New Mexico's 2020 vision plan is a sustained culture of innovation committed to developing solutions to society's complex problems through research and generating new knowledge and then taking those solutions into the marketplace;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 9, 2015 be declared "UNM Day" in the senate and that the university of New Mexico be commended for its service and dedication to the residents of New Mexico; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the president of the university of New Mexico.
