A MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALBUQUERQUE BRANCH OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE.
WHEREAS, the Albuquerque branch of the national association for the advancement of colored people, also known as the NAACP, celebrated its one hundredth birthday on January 5, 2015; and
WHEREAS, nationally, the NAACP began in 1909, three years before New Mexico became the forty-seventh state; and
WHEREAS, the Albuquerque branch, founded in 1915, is one of the oldest chapters of the NAACP; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination; and
WHEREAS, the vision of the NAACP is to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race; and
WHEREAS, the NAACP seeks to remove barriers of racial discrimination through democratic processes, to inform the public of the adverse effects of racial discrimination and to seek the elimination of racial discrimination; and
WHEREAS, the NAACP further seeks the enactment and enforcement of federal, state and local laws securing civil rights; and
WHEREAS, Harold Bailey, Ph.D., president of the NAACP Albuquerque branch, has stated that there must be a collective strategy to address common adverse situations and has pledged to work with other groups to form partnerships and coalitions to address similar problems; and
WHEREAS, the NAACP's leadership and perseverance in protecting individuals against hate crimes and civil rights violations has greatly benefited the Albuquerque community; and
WHEREAS, the Albuquerque branch of the NAACP administration is committed to enhancing the rich history of the Albuquerque branch and to working with unity and purpose;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the Albuquerque branch of the national association for the advancement of colored people be recognized for its dedication and commitment to social justice on its one hundredth anniversary; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the president of the Albuquerque branch of the NAACP.
