FOR THE ECONOMIC AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
A JOINT MEMORIAL
REQUESTING CONTINUOUS COOPERATION AMONG THE GOVERNMENTS OF NEW MEXICO, THE UNITED STATES AND MEXICO TO IMPROVE AND MAINTAIN ROADS.
WHEREAS, economic activity in Dona Ana county and along the United States-Mexico border has steadily increased over the past several years; and
WHEREAS, trade between the United States and Mexico is valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars, and each month, more than one billion dollars ($1,000,000,000) worth of products cross the United States-Mexico border at the Santa Teresa port of entry in southern New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, the economies of New Mexico, the United States and Mexico have realized significant benefits from increased productivity and trade in the Santa Teresa-San Jeronimo port-of-entry border region over the past several years; and
WHEREAS, the increased economic activity in the border region has resulted in an increase in infrastructure needs, specifically road improvement, and maintenance needs within the New Mexico-Mexico international border region;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governments of New Mexico, the United States and Mexico be requested to cooperate on issues related to the improvement and maintenance of roads in the Santa Teresa-San Jeronimo port-of-entry border region and within the New Mexico-Mexico international border region; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor of New Mexico, the New Mexico secretary of transportation, the New Mexico congressional delegation, the United States secretary of transportation and the secretariat of communications and transportation for Mexico.
