A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TO DIRECT THE APPROPRIATE INTERIM LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE TO HEAR TESTIMONY AND RECEIVE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE PUBLIC REGULATION COMMISSION, THE ATTORNEY GENERAL AND REPRESENTATIVES OF THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY, AFTER COOPERATIVE EFFORTS, TO REVIEW AND CONSIDER MODERNIZATION AND SIMPLIFICATION OF NEW MEXICO TELECOMMUNICATIONS STATUTES.
WHEREAS, New Mexico telecommunications services are regulated pursuant to the New Mexico Telecommunications Act and the Rural Telecommunications Act of New Mexico, which were originally enacted in 1985 and 1999, respectively; and
WHEREAS, the telecommunications industry has undergone significant change since these statutes were enacted; and
WHEREAS, it is in the public interest for the legislature, the public regulation commission and affected parties to consider whether New Mexico telecommunications statutes should be updated to reflect the changing telecommunications marketplace and advancing technologies;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico legislative council be requested to direct the appropriate interim legislative committee to hear testimony and receive recommendations from the public regulation commission, the attorney general and representatives of the telecommunications industry after their cooperative efforts to review and consider modernization and simplification of New Mexico telecommunications statutes; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the co-chairs of the New Mexico legislative council.
