A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE LEGISLATIVE EDUCATION STUDY COMMITTEE TO STUDY THE CURRENT AND POTENTIAL ROLE OF INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, international baccalaureate programs are recognized worldwide as leaders in educational programming that promote the success of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and provide accelerated and enriched programs for advanced and gifted students; and
WHEREAS, international baccalaureate meets the diverse learning needs of students by incorporating cutting-edge, evidence-based practices in education in the areas of standards-based education and assessment practice; and
WHEREAS, international baccalaureate is recognized as the premier college preparatory program in the United States and abroad; and
WHEREAS, international baccalaureate provides excellent research-based professional development and provides additional, internationally benchmarked accountability and reliability standards; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico association of international baccalaureate world schools has taken a leadership role in supporting and promoting international baccalaureate programs in New Mexico through professional development by promoting collaboration among schools and by advising administrators and governing bodies; and
WHEREAS, the association and member schools have developed into a unifying force, bringing together neighborhood and charter public schools along with tribal and private educational institutions to advance educational reform in New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, leadership in the international baccalaureate programs in New Mexico has been provided by united world college-USA of Montezuma, desert academy of Santa Fe, cottonwood classical preparatory school of Albuquerque, Corrales international school of Albuquerque, the international school at Mesa del Sol of Albuquerque, Sandia high school of Albuquerque, Navajo preparatory school of Farmington, New Mexico international school of Albuquerque, Nina Otero community school of Santa Fe and the international baccalaureate magnet school of Santa Fe; and
WHEREAS, the international baccalaureate diploma program is recognized by the public education department as meeting the New Mexico college and career readiness standards and for meeting advanced placement course work; and
WHEREAS, the benefits of the international baccalaureate diploma program in the United States and abroad include competitive advantage in the admissions and scholarship process and the opportunity for advanced standing and earned college credits; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico, New Mexico institute of mining and technology and New Mexico state university award college credit for international baccalaureate course work;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislative education study committee be requested to study the current and potential role of the international baccalaureate educational programs in New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the legislative education study committee be requested to report its findings and recommendations to the first session of the fifty-second legislature; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the legislative education study committee.
