A JOINT RESOLUTION

PROPOSING A NEW SECTION OF ARTICLE 7 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF NEW MEXICO TO SET CERTAIN RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES FOR ELECTIVE OFFICE.

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. It is proposed to amend Article 7 of the constitution of New Mexico by adding a new section to read:

     "A person desiring to be a candidate for nomination or election to a public office in the state shall prove the person's residency in the district that the person wishes to represent by:

          A. being registered to vote in the district; and

          B. having the person's motor vehicle, if any, registered in the district."

     SECTION 2. The amendment proposed by this resolution shall be submitted to the people for their approval or rejection at the next general election or at any special election prior to that date that may be called for that purpose.
