A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THAT THE NEW MEXICO CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION SUPPORT THE INCLUSION OF THE UNITING AMERICAN FAMILIES ACT IN IMMIGRATION REFORM LEGISLATION INTRODUCED IN THE ONE HUNDRED THIRTEENTH UNITED STATES CONGRESS.
WHEREAS, preserving families and promoting family reunification should be a cornerstone of the United States immigration system; and
WHEREAS, American citizens should not be forced to choose between their partners and their country; and
WHEREAS, the Uniting American Families Act would allow Americans to keep their families together; and
WHEREAS, a growing number of United States fortune five hundred companies are losing valued employees to foreign competitors in more than twenty-five countries where laws allow these families to be together; and
WHEREAS, current laws also affect small business owners, some of whom have been forced to move their businesses abroad in order to keep their families together, often taking critical United States jobs with them; and
WHEREAS, granting gays and lesbians the ability to sponsor their partners would end considerable heartbreak and allow New Mexico and the United States to retain valuable talent in all manner of occupations; and
WHEREAS, the Uniting American Families Act would allow United States businesses to recruit and retain the best and the brightest and allow Americans to keep their families together in the country they call home; and
WHEREAS, over two thousand five hundred faith leaders and organizations from all fifty states support the Uniting American Families Act; and
WHEREAS, the Uniting American Families Act enjoyed bipartisan support in the one hundred twelfth United States congress; and
WHEREAS, all New Mexicans deserve the chance to spend their lives with the persons they love;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that members of the New Mexico congressional delegation be urged to support the inclusion of the Uniting American Families Act in comprehensive immigration reform legislation; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the members of the New Mexico congressional delegation.
