A MEMORIAL

PROCLAIMING JANUARY 28, 2013 AS "NMSU AGGIES ARE TOUGH ENOUGH TO WEAR PINK DAY" IN THE SENATE.

     WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among New Mexico women, representing one-third of all cases; and

     WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among New Mexico women; and

     WHEREAS, "NMSU Aggies Are Tough Enough to Wear Pink" is a Las Cruces-based volunteer organization dedicated to heightening awareness of breast cancer and raising money for breast cancer research; and

     WHEREAS, in 2007, breast cancer survivors Magellia Boston, Laura Conniff, June Mumme and Pat Sisbarro collaborated with New Mexico state university to organize a "NMSU Aggies Are Tough Enough to Wear Pink" football game; and

     WHEREAS, the "NMSU Aggies Are Tough Enough to Wear Pink" football game has become an annual tradition and the largest "Tough Enough to Wear Pink" event in the world; and

     WHEREAS, the volunteer organization, led by co-chairs Magellia Boston, Laura Conniff, Mary Henson and Pat Sisbarro, has expanded its breast cancer awareness and fundraising efforts to include high school football games, a fashion show luncheon for one thousand attendees, a "5K/10K Fun Run & Walk" and other events; and

     WHEREAS, Las Cruces-area media, schools, business leaders, politicians and citizens have enthusiastically joined in the volunteer organization's mission; and 

     WHEREAS, the volunteer organization has raised nearly two million five hundred thousand dollars ($2,500,000) in cash and in-kind contributions for the Cowboys for Cancer Research endowment, which helps to fund cancer research at New Mexico state university and the university of New Mexico;  

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that January 28, 2013 be declared "NMSU Aggies Are Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day" in the senate; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the "NMSU Aggies Are Tough Enough to Wear Pink" volunteer organization.
