A JOINT MEMORIAL

SUPPORTING THE ONE BILLION RISING EVENT TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS INITIATED BY V-DAY AND RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY 14, 2013 AS ONE BILLION RISING V-DAY IN NEW MEXICO.

     WHEREAS, V-Day, a not-for-profit charity, is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls and is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing antiviolence organizations; and

     WHEREAS, one in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, meaning more than one billion of the world's population of seven billion will experience this violence; and

     WHEREAS, One Billion Rising is a campaign initiated by V-Day to break the chain of violence against women and girls, using dance as a tool to walk out, rise up and demand an end to violence; and

     WHEREAS, One Billion Rising is an act of solidarity, demonstrating to women and girls the commonality of their struggle and their power in numbers; and

     WHEREAS, One Billion Rising is a call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until rape and rape culture end; and

     WHEREAS, through One Billion Rising, the world will see that New Mexico has the collective strength to help break the chain of violence against women and girls;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it support the One Billion Rising campaign to end violence against women and girls; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that February 14, 2013 be recognized in New Mexico as One Billion Rising V-Day in honor of the survivors of violence and sexual abuse; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to V-Day, the New Mexico coalition against domestic violence; Esperanza shelter for battered families; the New Mexico coalition of sexual assault programs; Solace crisis treatment center; the Life Link; Tewa women united; the coordinated community response council; Together Strong; Silver regional sexual assault support services; Cecile Lipworth; and Audri Roybal.
