A MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING ONE BILLION RISING NEW MEXICO AS AN EVENT DEMONSTRATING SOLIDARITY AGAINST VIOLENCE TOWARD WOMEN AND GIRLS AND DEDICATED IN HONOR OF THE SURVIVORS OF SUCH VIOLENCE THROUGHOUT NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, One Billion Rising is a global campaign to bring the issue of violence against women and girls to the forefront of the agenda; and
WHEREAS, there are seven billion people on the planet; and
WHEREAS, according to the United Nations, one in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, according to Department of Health statistics, one in four women will be raped or stalked and one in three will experience domestic violence, meaning that at least one-third of one million women in the state will experience violence; and
WHEREAS, One Billion Rising New Mexico is an invitation to dance and a call to men and women to refuse to participate in the status quo until all violence against women and girls ends; and
WHEREAS, One Billion Rising New Mexico will demonstrate empowerment through a dance revolution; and
WHEREAS, One Billion Rising New Mexico is inviting all women and the men who love them to walk out, dance, rise up and demand an end to violence; and
WHEREAS, One Billion Rising New Mexico will move New Mexico, activating women and men across the state; and
WHEREAS, One Billion Rising New Mexico wants the world to see New Mexico's collective strength, numbers and solidarity to support all efforts across all social-economic strata;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that One Billion Rising New Mexico be recognized as an event dedicated in honor of the survivors of violence and sexual abuse throughout New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of health, the secretary of human services, the secretary of children, youth and families, One Billion Rising New Mexico, the New Mexico Coalition to End Domestic Violence, Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families, Solace Crisis Treatment Center, the LifeLink, Tewa Women United, the Coordinated Community Response Council, Cecile Lipworth, Audri Roybal and Together Strong.
