A MEMORIAL
DECLARING THE WEEK OF JANUARY 22, 2012 THROUGH JANUARY 28, 2012 "NEW MEXICO SCHOOL CHOICE WEEK" IN THE SENATE.
WHEREAS, all children in New Mexico should have the right to attend schools of the highest quality possible; and
WHEREAS, citizens throughout New Mexico agree that improving the quality of education in New Mexico and expanding access to highly effective schools is an issue of the highest importance to the state's leaders; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico recognizes the critical role that an effective and accountable system of education plays in preparing all of New Mexico's children to be successful in a competitive global economy; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico has a multitude of high-quality public schools, public charter schools and private schools; and
WHEREAS, New Mexico has many high-quality teaching professionals in public, charter and private schools across the state who are strongly committed to educating the state's children; and
WHEREAS, the vital cause of education reform is one that transcends ideology and political party affiliation; and
WHEREAS, research in New Mexico and elsewhere in the nation demonstrates conclusively that providing children with multiple schooling options improves academic performance;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the week of January 22, 2012 through January 28, 2012 be declared "New Mexico School Choice Week" in the senate; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor and to all members of the New Mexico senate.
