A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 7, 2012 AS "VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER DAY" AT THE SENATE.

     WHEREAS, New Mexico has more than three hundred sixty-nine certified fire departments, of which three hundred seven are true volunteer fire departments; and

     WHEREAS, an additional forty-one departments are combined paid and volunteer fire departments; and

     WHEREAS, there are five thousand nine hundred eighty-three volunteers serving in these departments; and

     WHEREAS, since January 1, 2011, there have been more than one thousand fires that were responded to by fire departments, covering more than one million acres; and

     WHEREAS, volunteer fire departments are the first line of defense against fires for most of the state; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico legislature has recognized firefighters by naming, in statute, September 11 of each year as "Firefighter Day of Remembrance";

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 7, 2012 be declared "Volunteer Firefighter Day" at the senate.
