A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE TO RETAIN THE ROTC UNIT AT NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY.
WHEREAS, New Mexico state university is New Mexico's land grant university and a Hispanic-serving institution; and
WHEREAS, the air force reserve officer training corps, ROTC, program at New Mexico state university is one of the oldest programs on campus and will celebrate its sixty-fifth anniversary during the 2011-2012 academic year; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico state university air force ROTC was in existence before the air force became an independent service; and
WHEREAS, as the state's land grant university, New Mexico state university has a rich history of preparing young men and women to serve in the nation's military; and
WHEREAS, the presence of the air force ROTC program at New Mexico state university is an important element in the state's development of leaders for the nation's military; and
WHEREAS, the secretary of the air force intends to disestablish and consolidate thirty-four programs, including the reserve officer training corps program at New Mexico state university;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the secretary of the air force be requested to continue the air force ROTC program at New Mexico state university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the house of representatives be requested to call upon the New Mexico congressional delegation, the United States department of defense and the United States air force to retain the presence of the air force ROTC program at New Mexico state university; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the members of the New Mexico congressional delegation, the secretary of defense, the secretary of the air force and the board of regents of New Mexico state university.
