A MEMORIAL

DECLARING FEBRUARY 2, 2012 AS "ROY "PUFFY" GONZALES DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

     WHEREAS, Roy "Puffy" Gonzales was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico, on November 12, 1938 and passed away at his home in that fair city on May 31, 2011; and

     WHEREAS, Puffy Gonzales graduated from west Las Vegas high school and served honorably in the United States army, the army reserve and the New Mexico national guard; and

     WHEREAS, he received his bachelor's and master's degrees from New Mexico highlands university and served as a music teacher for the west Las Vegas school district for more than thirty years; and

     WHEREAS, he was a member of the New Mexico music educators association and the northeastern New Mexico music educators association; and

     WHEREAS, he was a volunteer member of the E. Romero hose and fire company as well as a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #408 and Our Lady of Sorrows church; and

     WHEREAS, through his extensive community involvement, Mr. Gonzales served as a wonderful role model and inspiration for hundreds of students, not just in the joys and skills of music, but in the joy of service to one's community; and

     WHEREAS, he served as a model for all New Mexicans in his dedication to his community, his state and to the many "next generations" he educated and mentored;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it recognize the many accomplishments of Puffy Gonzales and declare February 2, 2012 as "Roy "Puffy" Gonzales Day" in the house of representatives; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that heartfelt condolences be extended to the family and many friends of Puffy Gonzales; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the family of Puffy Gonzales and to the west Las Vegas valley middle school for permanent display in the band room.
