A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING GEORGE LOPEZ FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION TO LATINOS IN THE PERFORMING ARTS AND HIS CONTINUED VISITS TO NEW MEXICO.

     WHEREAS, George Lopez is an entertainer whose work includes stand-up comedy, movies, television and a talk show; and

     WHEREAS, George Lopez's brand of comedy can be quite irreverent, and it also takes aim at himself and Latino culture, often examining race and ethnic relations, with a strong emphasis on making us all see the absurdity of some of our fears and biases; and

     WHEREAS, he has devoted much of his time and energy to community efforts and has received numerous awards for his artistic work and charitable endeavors; and

     WHEREAS, he is a native of Los Angeles, he grew up in the San Fernando valley's Mission Hills and he was recognized in 2005 by Time magazine as one of the twenty-five most influential Hispanics in America; and

     WHEREAS, G-Lo, as he has dubbed himself, has a star on the Hollywood walk of fame and a life-size figure of himself in Madame Tussauds wax museum; and

     WHEREAS, George Lopez's signature lines, "'ta loco", "I know, huh", "save me some", "I can ne'er do nothing", "right now, right now" and "why you crying?" are used by his fans in everyday conversations and still make people laugh; and

     WHEREAS, George Lopez visits New Mexico often and, like Barelas coffee house, he can refer to the state as the land of "mi chante";

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that George Lopez be welcomed to New Mexico and that he be encouraged to spend more time here but that he not tune in to the legislative webcasts lest he pick up some new material; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to G-Lo, otherwise known as George Lopez.
