A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING A STUDY TO INCLUDE THE FEASIBILITY OF CONSTRUCTING PEDESTRIAN OVERPASSES ON OR NEAR THE SANTA FE INDIAN SCHOOL CAMPUS AND CERRILLOS ROAD AND THE NEW MEXICO SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF CAMPUS AND CERRILLOS ROAD OR ST. FRANCIS DRIVE.

     WHEREAS, the Santa Fe Indian school is a sovereign educational institution situated on Cerrillos road, which has seven hundred students and staff; and

     WHEREAS, the New Mexico school for the deaf is one of New Mexico's state specialty schools as well as an outreach agency situated on the corner of Cerrillos road and St. Francis drive and has three hundred students and staff; and

     WHEREAS, Cerrillos road is used by the Santa Fe Indian school students and staff and Cerrillos road and St. Francis drive are used by the New Mexico school for the deaf students and staff, as well as thousands of residents of Santa Fe on a daily basis; and

     WHEREAS, currently, there are no safety crosswalks or structures in place; and

     WHEREAS, many people have been hurt or killed on Cerrillos road and St. Francis drive; and

     WHEREAS, the Santa Fe Indian school, the New Mexico school for the deaf and the city of Santa Fe have concerns for the "safety and welfare" of their students, staff and residents;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of transportation be requested to work with the Santa Fe Indian school and the New Mexico school for the deaf to address the safety issues associated with Cerrillos road and St. Francis drive and the two schools; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the department of transportation be requested to study the safety solutions for students and staff at the Santa Fe Indian school and the New Mexico school for the deaf as well as other pedestrians and residents accessing St. Francis drive and Cerrillos road to include the feasibility of construction of pedestrian overpasses and report to an appropriate interim committee on the potential solutions to the safety issues to the students and staff of the Santa Fe Indian school and the New Mexico school for the deaf by November 2011; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of transportation, the mayor of Santa Fe, the Santa Fe Indian school and the New Mexico school for the deaf.
