AN ACT

RELATING TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS; REQUIRING FIELD TRIPS TO JAILS AND JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITIES FOR SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE CLASSES.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. A new section of the Public School Code is enacted to read:

     "[NEW MATERIAL] MIDDLE SCHOOLS--FIELD TRIPS TO JAILS AND JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITIES.--Every school district shall institute in every middle school in the school district a delinquency deterrence program that requires field trips to jails and juvenile detention facilities for seventh and eighth grade classes. A student must go on at least one field trip to a jail or juvenile detention facility in the seventh and eighth grades, unless the student's parent signs a waiver of participation. The middle school shall provide an alternative learning experience about the consequences of juvenile and adult crime to a student whose parent has waived participation in the field trip."

     SECTION 2. APPLICABILITY.--The provisions of this act apply to the 2011-2012 and subsequent school years.
