A MEMORIAL
RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE NEW MEXICO ALLIANCE OF YMCAS AND DECLARING FEBRUARY 5, 2010 AS "SUPPORT THE ALLIANCE OF YMCAS DAY" IN THE SENATE.
WHEREAS, for more than nine decades, the New Mexico alliance of YMCAs has brought a special dimension to our community; and
WHEREAS, more than eight thousand families benefit directly from the YMCA's extensive programing for all ages and interest groups, including toddler activities, teen programs and fitness and wellness programs for senior citizens; and
WHEREAS, more than thirty-eight thousand youth benefit each year from programs such as YMCA after-school care, childcare, basketball, volleyball, character counts, youth and government, yes corps, counselor-in-training and many other programs; and
WHEREAS, more than one thousand individuals volunteer at the "Y" each year, making the New Mexico YMCA organization one of the largest volunteer-led and -driven organizations in New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, the YMCA is governed by a local volunteer board of directors, who give generously of their time, money and effort so that our citizens may grow as responsible members of their families and communities; develop self-confidence and self-respect, as well as an awareness of the rights and worth of every individual; appreciate that physical and mental health are gifts that should be maintained through physical fitness and spiritual growth; and develop and use their capacities for leadership; and
WHEREAS, the YMCA's ability to foster these goals depends wholly upon continued community support through united way, memberships and program support and through expansion, such as the new youth and family gymnasium in Los Alamos, the teen center in Espanola, the remodeling of two YMCA branches and the proposed new branches in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico alliance of YMCAs be recognized for its contributions to the citizens of New Mexico and that February 5, 2010 be declared "Support the Alliance of YMCAs Day" in the senate.
