A MEMORIAL
ENCOURAGING ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE WITH THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY.
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic; and
WHEREAS, the Anatolian peninsula, comprising most of modern Turkey, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world; and
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey has a very diverse culture that is a blend of various elements of the Oğuz Turkic, Anatolian, Ottoman and western culture and traditions, which started with the westernization of the Ottoman empire and still continues today; and
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey was a founding member of the United Nations; and
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey has been and continues to be an important and strategic United States ally; and
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey is a transcontinental Eurasian country that is part of both the European and Asian continents and joins the two; and
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey has a rich history and strong cultural identity; and
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey borders the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black seas; and
WHEREAS, much of the republic of Turkey has a temperate Mediterranean climate; and
WHEREAS, the tourism industry in the republic of Turkey has experienced rapid growth over the past twenty years; and
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey is known worldwide for its architecture and archaeological riches; and
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey has the world's fifteenth largest gross domestic product; and
WHEREAS, the republic of Turkey has one of the world's fasting growing economies;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor be requested to encourage a significant and ongoing economic and cultural exchange with the republic of Turkey; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the rich history and natural beauty of the republic of Turkey be recognized and applauded; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the office of the governor, the office of the lieutenant governor, the economic development department, the tourism department and the cultural affairs department.
