A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING JANUARY 28, 2010 AS "FIESTA COUNCIL DAY" AT THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

 

     WHEREAS, the fiestas of northern New Mexico focus on the history of the area and the blending of Spanish and Native

American cultures; and

     WHEREAS, fiesta celebrations attract thousands of residents and tourists, which brings in additional revenue to New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, fiestas are often attended by dignitaries and distinguished guests from all over New Mexico and the United States; and

     WHEREAS, the fiestas of northern New Mexico represent centuries of history, culture and tradition; and  

     WHEREAS, the fiesta of Santa Fe is a tradition that has been continuously observed for two hundred ninety-eight years; and

     WHEREAS, the fiestas of Las Vegas have been celebrated for one hundred twenty successive years; and

     WHEREAS, the fiestas of Taos have been celebrated for as long as anyone can remember; and

     WHEREAS, the city of Espanola has rediscovered and embraced the fiesta tradition since the mid-1960s; and

     WHEREAS, the modern fiestas are still characterized by the religious tone set by the first fiestas; and

     WHEREAS, the fiestas are a blend of giving thanks, revelry and pride in the hearts of all who celebrate fiestas; and

     WHEREAS, the fiestas could not take place without the hard work of the various fiesta councils of Espanola, Las Vegas, Santa Fe and Taos; and

     WHEREAS, fiesta councils carry on a very long tradition that helps to continue the blending of Spanish and Native American cultures and traditions;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that January 28, 2010 be recognized as "Fiesta Council Day" at the house of representatives and that recognition be extended to all fiesta council members; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the fiesta councils of Espanola, Las Vegas, Santa Fe and Taos.
