A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO FOUNDATION TO CREATE A TASK FORCE TO STUDY AND IDENTIFY FUNDING FOR CAPITAL EXPANSION OF THE CHILDREN'S CAMPUS.
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico children's campus is a top-ranked children's daycare facility that provides enriched, innovative child care to the children of the university's students, staff and faculty; and
WHEREAS, the children's campus currently has a waiting list of several hundred children, many of whom have been waiting years to use the children's campus; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico has completed renovation and expansion plans for the children's campus, but has not identified capital funding for this expansion; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico has no dedicated funding to fully cover the cost of operating an expanded children's campus; and
WHEREAS, state general funding for the children's campus is not recurring; and
WHEREAS, most students, especially students who are parents, have limited funds, and are particularly challenged to continue their education in the current economic climate; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the state to support and encourage those students who are parents returning to school to obtain higher education; and
WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico graduate and professional student association has identified the funding of children's campus as its top priority;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the university of New Mexico foundation be requested to create a task force to study and identify funding for capital expansion and for the operation of the children's campus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the task force include representation from the college of education and the university of New Mexico graduate and professional student association; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to the president of the university of New Mexico foundation.
