A MEMORIAL

RECOGNIZING LOIS OPAL WILKINSON ALDRICH AND PROCLAIMING MARCH 4, 2009 "LOIS OPAL WILKINSON ALDRICH DAY" AT THE SENATE.

 

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Lois Opal Wilkinson Aldrich was born in Alva, Oklahoma, on March 4, 1909 and was raised by a ranching family in Oklahoma, the Texas panhandle and Gladstone, New Mexico; and

     WHEREAS, she earned her teaching degree in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in 1934 and began teaching in the Capitan schools that year, teaching third- and fourth-grade students there for more than thirty-five years until her retirement in 1971; and

     WHEREAS, as a teacher, she demanded that her students practice good manners, be respectful of others and themselves and educate themselves to their fullest capability; and

     WHEREAS, after her retirement, she was an active volunteer at the Capitan senior center and the Capitan methodist church; she served on the Capitan cemetery board; and she served as president and chaplain on various committees of the Lincoln county republican women; and

     WHEREAS, she lived in Lincoln county from 1934 until 2006, when she moved to the Good Samaritan care center in Socorro; and

     WHEREAS, she will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on March 4, 2009;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Mrs. Lois Opal Wilkinson Aldrich be recognized for the outstanding service she has provided to the residents of New Mexico as an educator and community volunteer and that March 4, 2009 be declared "Lois Opal Wilkinson Aldrich Day" at the senate; and

     BE IF FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Mrs. Lois Opal Wilkinson Aldrich.
