A JOINT MEMORIAL
CONGRATULATING SENATOR MARY JANE M. GARCIA AS THE HONORARY CHAIRWOMAN OF THE NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION-NEW MEXICO READ ACROSS AMERICA CAMPAIGN FOR 2008-2009; DECLARING MARCH 2, 2009 AS "READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY" IN THE LEGISLATURE.
WHEREAS, the New Mexico legislature stands firmly committed to promoting reading as the catalyst for students' future academic success, their preparation for America's jobs of the future and their ability to compete in the global economy; and
WHEREAS, the legislature has provided significant leadership in the area of community involvement in the education of youth, grounded in the principle that educational investment is the key to the state's well-being and long-term quality of life; and
WHEREAS, "read across America" is a national celebration of Dr. Seuss's one-hundred-fifth birthday on March 2, 2009, sponsored by the national education association, promoting reading and adult involvement in the education of the nation's students; and
WHEREAS, Senator Mary Jane M. Garcia has always supported efforts to enhance reading and public education in New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, Senator Garcia has been selected as the national education association-New Mexico's read across America honorary chairwoman for 2008-2009;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the legislature call on the residents of New Mexico to ensure that every child is in a safe place reading together with a caring adult on March 2, 2009; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that March 2, 2009 be declared as "Read Across America Day in the New Mexico Legislature"; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the legislature
enthusiastically endorse "read across America" and recommit the state to engage in programs and activities to make America's children the best readers in the world; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that congratulations be extended by the legislature to Senator Mary Jane M. Garcia as the honorary chairwoman for the national education association-New Mexico read across America campaign for 2008-2009.
