A MEMORIAL
REQUESTING A STUDY OF THE SAFETY OF A RAILROAD CROSSING NEAR THE CITY OF LAS VEGAS.
WHEREAS, there is a railroad crossing located on Rio Arriba road north of the city of Las Vegas; and
WHEREAS, Fred Stark, a resident of Denver, Colorado, was killed on September 11, 2008 at the railroad crossing on Rio Arriba road in a collision between an Amtrak train and the vehicle in which he was riding; and
WHEREAS, Michael Esquibel, a resident of the city of Las Vegas, was killed on January 15, 2009 at the railroad crossing on Rio Arriba road in a collision between an Amtrak train and the vehicle in which he was riding; and
WHEREAS, the railroad crossing on Rio Arriba road has only a posted railroad crossing sign and no other traffic controls; and
WHEREAS, at the railroad crossing on Rio Arriba road, there is limited visibility to the south, and trains approach the crossing at a high rate of speed; and
WHEREAS, the railroad crossing on Rio Arriba road has a high level of vehicular traffic as it provides access to a solid waste transfer station;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of transportation be requested to conduct a study of the safety of the rail crossing on Rio Arriba road north of the city of Las Vegas; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the secretary of transportation and to the mayor and city council of the city of Las Vegas.
