A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO CONDUCT A TRAFFIC STUDY OF ALAMEDA BOULEVARD NORTHWEST IN THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE AND BERNALILLO COUNTY.

 

     WHEREAS, Alameda boulevard northwest already carries a high load of vehicular traffic; and

     WHEREAS, the proposed expansion of the General Mills plant is projected to increase traffic on Alameda boulevard northwest by an additional two hundred tractor-trailer truck trips per day; and

     WHEREAS, Alameda boulevard is the only arterial roadway between the Bernalillo township and interstate 40 that is used for truck traffic, thereby creating a dangerous situation for the residents of the area; and

     WHEREAS, the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Catholic church and school is located on Alameda boulevard and may be suffering structural damage from the impact of tractor-trailer truck traffic; and

     WHEREAS, parishioners and students at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Catholic church and school are negatively affected by the noise and fumes from the heavy traffic; and

     WHEREAS, Alameda elementary school is located on Alameda boulevard and school children are at risk from the heavy traffic and are negatively affected by the noise and fumes from the heavy traffic; and

     WHEREAS, the area surrounding a major part of Alameda boulevard is residential; and

     WHEREAS, one of the main trails and bikeways runs parallel and adjacent to Alameda boulevard and is severely and negatively affected by the high load of vehicular traffic on the congested roadway; and

     WHEREAS, the health and safety of the many residents in the area are endangered by the traffic congestion on Alameda boulevard;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of transportation be requested to work with the city of Albuquerque and Bernalillo county to conduct a traffic study of Alameda boulevard northwest, which study will include analyzing what additional safety improvements, infrastructure improvements and traffic restrictions are necessary on Alameda boulevard northwest between its intersections with interstate 25 and Coors boulevard northwest; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the governor, the secretary of transportation, the mayor of the city of Albuquerque, the city council of the city of Albuquerque, the director of the city of Albuquerque municipal development department, the Bernalillo county commission and the Bernalillo county manager.
