A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TO DIRECT THE APPROPRIATE COMMITTEE TO ASSESS THE EFFECT OF THE UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY'S NEW CLEAN WATER STANDARDS ON NEW MEXICO'S CAPITAL EXPENDITURES FOR PREVENTION OF POLLUTANTS AND MANAGEMENT OF ILLICIT DISCHARGES INTO NEW MEXICO'S WATER SYSTEMS.

 

     WHEREAS, protecting New Mexico's water resources is critically important to safeguard the health of the public and the health of our unique environment; and

     WHEREAS, illicit and unregulated discharges are hazardous to New Mexico's water resources and costly to state and local governments in their efforts to meet federal and state water quality standards;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico legislative council be requested to direct the appropriate legislative interim committee to assess the effect of the United States environmental protection agency's new clean water standards on New Mexico's capital expenditures for prevention of pollutants and management of illicit discharges into New Mexico's water systems; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the committee report its findings and recommendations to the New Mexico legislative council by January 1, 2009; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the members of the New Mexico legislative council.
