Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial 25 (SJM 25) recognizes January 26, 2008 as “Greater Espanola Day" at
the New Mexico Legislature, honoring the entire Espanola Valley for its diversity of culture and
long-standing Hispanic traditions. Copies of this Memorial are to be transmitted to Michael
Chavarria, Governor of the Pueblo of Santa Clara; Earl Sanchez, Governor of the Pueblo of
Ohkay Owingeh; Felipe Martinez, Chair of the Rio Arriba County Commission; Joseph Maestas,
Mayor of the City of Espanola; and Archie Vigil, Mayor of the Village of Chama.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
The Memorial states the following:
•
The Espanola Valley lies nestled in both Rio Arriba and Santa Fe Counties and is
surrounded by the Pueblos of Santa Clara and Ohkay Owingeh and has vigorous
tricultural history.
•
1988 marked the 400
th
Anniversary of Hispanic influence in the Espanola Valley,
commencing in 1598 with the first Spanish settlement in Nuevo Mexico and the opening
of the trade route known as El Camino Rael, running from Mexico to the Pueblo of
Ohkay Owingeh.
•
The Legislature honors and promotes cultural diversity, including the strong Hispanic
culture and traditions that can be found throughout New Mexico.
•
The City of Espanola and the Counties of Rio Arriba and Santa Fe exemplify cultural
diversity and deep-rooted Hispanic traditions.
WHAT WILL BE THE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT ENACTING THIS BILL
The representatives, citizens, and visitors of New Mexico will not be able to celebrate the
diversity and culture of Espanola at the New Mexico State Legislature.
