Synopsis of Bill
House Memorial 10 resolves by the Senate of the State of New Mexico that January 29, 2008 be
declared as “Cowboy Day" at the Senate and to recognize July 26, 2008 as “New Mexico Day of
the Cowboy." All New Mexicans are encouraged to recognize cowboys, both past and present,
for their numerous contributions to the state and for keeping the best of New Mexico alive for
generations to come.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
HM 10 states as follows:
•
Cowboys and cowgirls are a fundamental part of New Mexico’s reputation as a leading
ranching state; and
•
Representing a diversity that is uniquely American, cowboys come from all walks f life,
transcending age, race, gender and generation, and their work ethic ad code of conduct
have long infused our great state and nation with pride and their values have set and
example for many; and
•
In the state’s early years, cowboys worked throughout the “Land of Enchantment,"
blazing trails as explorers and guardians of a growing American frontier, and their legacy
lives on today as men and women literally walk in the cowboys’ footsteps, working and
living upon the land; and
•
New Mexicans have long been recognized as leaders in the cowboy and ranching world,
with heroes and champions filling halls of fame across the country, including the cowboy
hall of fame, the cowgirl hall of fame and the pro rodeo hall of fame; and
•
The “National Day of the Cowboy" has been celebrated for the past three years, and
again, this year, Americans in communities both far and near will join to celebrate the
cowboys’ day.
