SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 581 appropriates nineteen thousand dollars ($19,000) from the General Fund to the
Public Education Department PED for the purpose of starting a sixth grade basketball program
for the Taos municipal school district.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of nineteen thousand dollars ($19,000) contained in this bill is a recurring
expense to the General Fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of
Fiscal Year 2009 shall revert to the General Fund.
SIGNIFICANT ISSUES
PED states:
After-school programs could produce connections with individuals or activities that are healthy
and supportive of positive growth and development of life skills. Those who attend programs
that emphasize healthy relationships and behaviors are less likely to engage in risk-related
relationships and behaviors. Youth could demonstrate positive changes in their attitudes and
perceptions regarding education, self-perceptions and sportsmanship at the end of the program.
