SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 572 appropriates $100.0 from the general fund to the Higher Education Department

for Luna Community College to provide instructional equipment for Wagon Mound Schools.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $100.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any

unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2009 shall revert to the

general fund.

This request was not submitted by Luna Community College to the New Mexico Higher

Education Department for review and is not included in the Department’s funding

recommendation for FY09.

SIGNIFICANT ISSUES

According to LCC, Luna Community College provides Dual Credit courses for the Wagon

Mound School District students. In order to provide better educational services, Wagon Mound

Schools is in need of educational equipment such as I-TV equipment, vocational equipment and

regular classroom equipment. The use of this equipment will not be limited to only Dual Credit

students. Regular Luna Community College students enrolling for classes in the Wagon Mound

site will have access to this equipment.

LCC notes further that Wagon Mound Schools is located in a very rural community setting. It is

approximately 40 miles from the Luna Community College main campus. In order to provide

post secondary educational services, Distance Education is heavily relied upon. Equipment

needs to be current and operable. Funding is requested to purchase equipment in order to

provide students quality educational services.
