SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

House Bill 318 appropriates $50.0 from the general fund to Agency to The Board of Regents of

the University of New Mexico for expenditure in FY09 for a theatre dance company in residence

at The Department of Theatre and Dance.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The appropriation of $50.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any

unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2009 shall revert to the

general fund.

This request was not submitted to the New Mexico Higher Education Department for review and

is not included in the Department’s legislative recommendation for FY09.

SIGNIFICANT ISSUES

The HED states:

The University of New Mexico's Department of Theatre and Dance is seeking

continuation of funding for a residency program that was established after the closing of

the Tricklock Theatre in Albuquerque. The residency program invites professional artists

to teach workshops and mentor graduate students in the Department of Theatre and

Dance. This program provides the opportunity for students to participate in intensive

training provided by professional actors that come to UNM to teach.

The Department of Theatre and Dance established this residency program based on the

Revolution International Theatre Company. This theatre company performs around New

Mexico and together with the residence provides additional training opportunities for

students to gain experience as stage managers and actors.

The $50,000 appropriation provides the salaries for the residence and allows them to live

rent free in an old fraternity house that UNM purchased for this purpose. According to a

department spokesperson this appropriation would take the program into a third year

while the Department of Theatre and Dance works to attract corporate and private

funding in addition to their regular fundraising efforts.
